Procion MX dyes are also known as cold-water fibre-reactive dyes.

For natural fabrics especially plant-based fabrics (eg cotton, linen, viscose) where they make the strongest bond with the fibre making them the most permanent & washfast of dyes.

They will work on animal-based fabrics (eg silk, wool) but may be paler or less predictable and will need to be acidified (eg addition of vinegar)

Procion MX dyes do not need prolonged heat (although hot water is required to dissolve the powder) so are particularly suited to wax-resist, shibori, ice-dyeing and hand-painting techniques.

When dyeing cotton etc, salt or urea, washing soda or soda ash are also required.
